Antique Cathedral Radios
The cathedral radio is a very popular radio design during from the 20s until the 40s. Almost any manufacturers of radios were building cathedral type radios. This particular design of radio became a very well known design and represented the antique radios during its era. They can be easily distinguished to other types of antique radios because of the arch-like design that are shaped like the corridors of a church or a cathedral. The upper part of the cathedral radio usually carries the speaker and the knobs are located below the speakers.
Before the popularity of Bakelite type of radios, cathedral radios were built with wood. These sturdy wooden radios could often be as big as regular furniture. Once Bakelite was introduced to the market, cathedral type radios shrunk in size. However, the capacity of cathedral radios in terms of projecting sounds; stayed the same. For collectors, the wooden type of antique cathedral radios is not as expensive compared to Bakelite type of antique cathedral radio. The reason for this is that wooden cathedral radios are also a little bit harder to restore compared to Bakelite. The internal components of cathedral radios on the other hand are almost the same since they are properly installed under the housing of the radio.
